Summary

This report proposes the appointment of a co-opted member to the Community Engagement & Citizen Focus Sub-Committee for 2010/11.

A. Recommendations

That

1. the Community Engagement and Citizen Focus Sub-Committee approves the nomination of Richard Hunt of the London Communities’ Policing Partnership (LCP2) as a co-opted member of the sub-committee for the committee year 2010/11; and
2. the Authority be asked to ratify the recommendation of the Community Engagement and Citizen Focus Sub-Committee to appoint Richard Hunt of LCP2 as a co-opted member of that Sub-Committee.

B. Supporting information

1. The Authority is responsible for making appointments of co-opted members for 2010/11, on recommendation from the relevant committee (Procedural Standing Orders 1.8.1).

2. The Community Engagement and Citizen Focus Sub-Committee has one co-opted member, Richard Hunt an employee of LCP2 (the umbrella group for community police engagement groups), whose appointment has assisted the Sub-Committee by providing representation for those directly involved in the delivery of community and police engagement.

3. This co-option will be made on the basis that:

1. co-opted members cannot vote and do not count towards the Sub-Committee’s quorum
2. the appointment is reviewed at the Authority’s annual meeting
3. the appointment is deemed to have lapsed if the co-opted member misses three consecutive meetings

4. The Committee is asked to consider his reappointment at this time so that it might be agreed by the annual meeting of the Authority on 24 June 2010.

1. Equalities Impact

The appointment of co-opted members enables committees to draw upon a wider range of independent expertise. By ensuring that there is an independent view point discrimination is eliminated as part of the positive duty the MPA has under the GLA Act 1999 and the Race Relations (Amendment) Act and more recently the Disability Discrimination Act 2005).
