This report updates the Metropolitan Police Authority with respect to the MPS’s Health and Safety performance.

Incidents Reported on MetAIR

1. A summary of the injuries reported on MetAir between August 2004 and July 2005 is attached at Appendix 1. In summary:

• The number of major accidents and more than 3-day injuries show a slight increase when compared to the twelve-month period to June 2005 and the annual rolling average. This rise reflects increased operational activity over the reporting period (Operation Theseus, Athera and Sorbus). Given the nature and scope of these operations it should be noted that only a slight increase was observed.
• Of the 12 major accidents, in July, 10 were minor fractures (4 slip/trip/falls, 2 assaults, 1 fall from height and 3 miscellaneous), 1 major fracture (broken leg) following a slip/trip/fall and 1 stabbing assault.
• In previous years, higher levels of assault were recorded in July and attributed to increased social activity, as reported to the Metropolitan Police Authority in a supplementary paper on assaults on 11 July 2005. This year, there was no such seasonal increase.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

2. The MPS has neither received or expected any Improvement or Prohibition Notices served and no notification of notices or litigation yet to be served in the period since the last Corporate Governance meeting.

3. Health and Safety Branch personnel attended an HSE-facilitated seminar on health, safety and policing. This brought together HR managers from UK police forces and the Home Office.

4. Branch personnel met with HSE officials on 23 August to review the dynamic risk assessment DVD and training pack (as reported to the Metropolitan Police Authority in a supplemental paper on assaults on 11 July 2005), which was favourably received as good practice.
