Report: 7
Date: 20 September 2001
By: Clerk

Summary

This report is a summary of the activities undertaken to progress the work on Independent Custody Visiting.

A. Recommendation

  1. That the committee notes the position outlined in the report.

B. Supporting information

Background

1. The lead members with responsibility for Independent Custody Visiting will meet MPA officers on 25 September 2001 to discuss the report, its recommendations and the implications for implementation.

Questionnaire/consultation report

2. The MPA has engaged in an extensive process of consultations with Independent Custody Visitors. Two reports have been written. The first is a ‘questionnaire response’. This records the numerical feedback from panels to the Home Office Guidance. The second is the ‘questionnaire analysis’, which provides a more detailed analysis of those responses as per the original recommendations. These reports are enclosed for members.

3. The report recommends that more detailed exploration and guidance is required on three of the more difficult areas identified during the consultation process (recruitment, administration and training). These will be explored with members who will decide on the most suitable process for progressing these areas.

C. Financial implications

The report recommendations and implementation can be obtained within the allocated budget.

D. Background papers

None.
