Nominations of members to develop the MPA's racial equality scheme

Report: 5
Date: 31 May 2001
By: Clerk

Summary

The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 requires all public authorities, such as the MPA, to develop a racial equality scheme which detail the actions and processes that the Authority will put in place to satisfy the requirements of the Act.

The CDO Committee has considered the proposal for a small working group of officers and members to progress this work and has asked that this be referred to this committee to confirm the membership.

A. Recommendations

  1. Committee identify members to form a small working group that will be responsible for the development of the Authority's Racial Equality Scheme.
  2. Members note the proposed nomination of CDO members.
  3. Members note the proposed dates of meetings of this work group.

B. Supporting information

1. The CDO Committee has considered the requirements of the race relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and have approved the provisional response that has been submitted to the APA who are collating the responses to the Home Office on behalf of all police authorities see Appendix 1 in Supporting material.

2. One aspect of the Act requires all Public Authorities to develop a Racial Equality Scheme that detail the actions and processes that the Authority will put in place to meet the requirements of the Act. The MPA have already begun putting together the intended polices that underpin the Authority's equal opportunities statement. This work will effectively be subsumed into the race equality scheme.

3. This scheme has to be completed by autumn 2001 and approved by the CRE. The CDO Committee has proposed that a small working group should be established to take this work forward. The proposed membership see Appendix 2 in Supporting material.

4. Members of this Committee are asked to approve the proposed membership of the working group and nominate members to the group from the other sub committees. The CDO members will be R David Muir, Cecile Lothian and Jenny Jones.
