People strategy

Report: 9
Date: 3 October 2002
By: Commissioner

Summary

To note the outcome of the work to refresh the People Strategy originally issued in 1999.

A. Recommendation

That the Committee note and endorse the attached strategy.

B. Supporting information

1. The People Strategy was first launched in 1999. Intended to outline the commitment of the MPS towards its staff, the strategy has acted as a launch-pad on which many initiatives have taken place and been introduced. In effect, the strategy was a five-year plan and opportunity has been taken, at the halfway point, to review what has taken place since its launch and to outline what actions remain to be undertaken.

2. Accordingly, a small group working with HR has reviewed the strategy and Appendix 1 outlines the findings. In sum, the appendix is the draft of a new strategy to be printed and issued to all staff. Sitting underneath the strategy is an action plan – copies of which can be made available upon request – which plots and timetables the actions to be taken to ensure the strategy is put in place.

3. The attached strategy, it is proposed, will be put into a format to be issued to each manager. A shorter summary, in the form of a single-fold leaflet, will be issued to each staff member.

C. Equality and diversity implications

The strategy outlines the MPS’s commitment towards a diverse workforce and summarises actions to be taken to achieve and monitor this.

D. Financial implications

The costs of printing and distribution of the leaflet (c. £17,000) are contained within existing HR budgets.

E. Background papers

None
