January performance report

Report: 3
Date: 13 March 2001
By: Commissioner

Summary

This report gives an overview of MPS performance, and provides a full listing of Policing Plan and Best Value Performance Indicators.

A. Recommendations

That committee members note the contents of this report.

B. Supporting information

1. The MPS performance report for January is circulated for the information of Members (Appendix 1). The MPS Performance Review Committee (PRC) considered this report on 26 February.

2. The report includes the full listing of the Best Value and Policing Plan indicators, showing information up to and including January wherever possible.

3. PRC considered performance against the Homicide target, and the proposed change to the target planned for next year. It was noted that the homicide target had been introduced in 2000/2001 following HMIC criticism and had focussed MPS attention on homicide performance. The 90 per cent target for 2001/2 would maintain the challenge.

4. PRC considered performance against burglary targets. The meeting noted that burglary levels were at a lower level than had been seen for many years. The reduction in JD rate for burglary was discussed, and the meeting noted action taken by TP. Burglary is the subject of a separate report to PSPM this month.

5. The meeting considered a draft evaluation of Strongbox at Hackney, Camden and Islington. PRC actioned further work to be done before the report was submitted to PSPM. This will be completed in time for the April PSPM meeting. PRC noted the work that is in hand to spread the Strongbox best practice to other boroughs.

6. PRC noted good practice in managing control rooms that had been identified at Hackney. The impact of this work at Hackney, and the performance of all BOCUs in managing response to emergency calls will be reviewed again in three months.

7. In considering Criminal Justice Unit (CJU) performance, the meeting considered problems in dealing with backlogs of warrants, and commissioned an action plan to develop guidance for boroughs.

C. Financial implications

None

D. Background papers
