MPA's Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee to Visit Southwark

64/01
14 September 2001

Deaths in Custody, the Met's Diversity Strategy and Independent Custody Visiting are on the Agenda for the MPA's Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee at its next meeting in the borough of Southwark. The committee will meet on 20th September 2001 at 6.00pm in Warwick Park School, Peckham Road, SE15 5DZ.

There will also be a period at the end of the meeting when members of the public can put questions to the Committee about policing in their borough and meet Members of the Committee.

Cecile Lothian, MPA link member for Southwark, said:

"The Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee meeting in the London borough of Southwark is welcomed. It gives the residents of the borough the chance to see how the MPA carries out its business.

"Also, following the death of Damilola Taylor, it is important that the public know of the work and commitment to joint working between Police and the Local Authority.

"The borough Commander and the Chief Executive Officer of the borough of Southwark will be presenting the Southwark Youth Strategy at the meeting.

"I believe this model is being adopted by the Met London-wide. Residents of the borough should be pleased to note this development and support the implementation of the Southwark Youth Strategy."

David Muir, Chair of the Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee said:

"The MPA believes that successful policing depends on policing with the consent of all our communities. Consultation is a cornerstone of our work and it is very important to us that people in the borough of Southwark make a contribution to the way their borough tackles crime and lets us know their concerns and opinions."

The guest presentation will be given by the borough Commander of Southwark and the Chief Executive of the borough, looking at research into youth crime. Southwark Council and Police have initiated many innovative schemes aimed at reducing youth crime, which are now considered as best practice by other agencies.
