MPA Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee to visit Sutton

86/01
8 November 2001

The borough of Sutton is the venue for the next meeting of the Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee. Agenda items will include community reassurance in the aftermath of the terrorist atrocities in New York on 11 September 2001 and the MPS' Domestic Violence Strategy. There will also be a guest presentation on Domestic Violence by Debbie Crisp, a member of Betsy Stanko's research team at Royal Holloway College, University of London.

The committee will meet in the London Borough of Sutton at Carshalton College, Nightingale Road, Carshalton, Surrey SM5 2EJ on Thursday, 15 November 2001 at 6.00 p.m.

Lord Graham Tope, MPA link member for Sutton said:

"We warmly welcome the Consultation Diversity and Outreach Committee to the borough of Sutton - the second safest borough in the MPS. Recently Sutton went for eight days without a single street robbery and our congratulations go out to Chief Superintendent Steve MacDonald and his officers for their achievement.

"However, we must not be complacent and we are fully aware of the community's concerns about anti-social crimes such as graffiti, nuisance and disquiet caused by youths gathering in public places, and rowdy disorder on Friday and Saturday nights. We are also aware that Domestic Violence can be an issue for all sections of our communities and we welcome Debbie Crisp's research and presentation on this subject.

"Locally our police consult with our communities to set crime targets as Sutton does not have the same level of burglary or robbery as experienced in other parts of London. Sutton in fact has led on the partnership approach and has developed strong links between police, council and other agencies over a period of approximately 12 years.

"This meeting will give residents of the borough of Sutton the chance to see how the MPA carries out its business and the opportunity to question members of the committee about policing issues."

David Muir, Chair of the Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee said:

"It is very important that the people of Sutton can make a contribution to the way their borough tackles crime and lets us know their concerns and opinions.

"Consultation is a cornerstone of our work and the MPA believes that successful policing depends on policing with the consent of all our communities."

At the end of the meeting there will be a period of time when the public can put questions to the committee about policing in their borough and meet members of the committee.
