Consultation Diversity and Outreach Committee

22/02
11 March 2002

The Consultation Diversity and Outreach Committee will hold its next meeting on Thursday 14 March 2002 at 6.00pm in Romney House, Marsham Street, London SW1.

The meeting is open to members of the public and there will be time at the end to raise general questions and comment on the items on the agenda.

David Muir, Chair of the CDO Committee said:

“The work of the Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee is vital in building effective partnerships with London’s diverse communities.

“We want a police service which has the confidence and trust of all its communities. We open our meetings to the public so everyone can gain a greater understanding of the work of the Metropolitan Police Authority.

“It is very important that people can contribute to the way London is policed and that they are able to let us know their opinions and concerns. “

At the meeting, the Committee will look at the re-organisation of the Met’s Diversity Directorate, which now has responsibility for the retention and progression of people from minority communities in the Met. This will now be co-ordinated by a new branch of the Diversity Directorate.

There will also be an update on the ‘Lessons from Tragedies’ report which looked at the way deaths in custody were dealt with by police, and put forward methods by which this tragic and difficult subject could be better handled. The update refers specifically to the detention of drunk detainees ands cell occupancy.

Progress reports on the ongoing work with Community and Police Consultative Groups, including the timetable for approving the funding allocation for groups, and Independent Custody Visiting will be considered by the committee. There is also a report on the MPS position on appropriate adult schemes, detailing those currently in existence throughout the Met.

Consultation Diversity and Outreach Committee meetings are usually held in a borough location. Although this meeting is being held at Romney House, it is not specifically for the borough of Westminster. That meeting will be arranged at a future date.
