MPA welcomes launch of Lambeth Trident Independent Advisory Group

23/02
14 March 2002

Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, today sent a message of support to the new Lambeth Trident Independent Advisory Group (IAG).

Operation Trident, an intelligence-based initiative to tackle gun crime amongst London's black communities, with a particular focus on drug-related shootings, has a well established London-wide IAG. The Lambeth IAG will be the first locally based group because of the borough’s high proportion of violent gun crime.

In his message Toby Harris said:

“The Metropolitan Police Authority is fully committed to supporting Operation Trident and welcomes the launch this evening of the Lambeth Trident Independent Advisory Group, which includes MPA representation.

“We wish the group every success and we pay tribute to the members’ determination to make a difference, to their community spirit and courage.

“The Lambeth IAG has a vital role to act as a critical friend to Operation Trident, influence and devise new and effective initiatives to reduce criminality, promote links within effected communities and, most importantly, support Trident witnesses.

“Together, working in partnership and mutual cooperation, we can triumph against the cowardly criminal gangs who disregard common decency for the lawlessness of the bullet and the gun.”

Notes to editors

1. Operation Trident, inaugurated in 1998, is made up of professional and dedicated officers. They have investigated 23 murders and more than 150 incidents of non-fatal shootings since the beginning of January 2001.
