MPA praise for Met's policing of May Day protests

02 May 2002

Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority has praised the ‘professional and proportionate’ May Day policing operation in London.

Speaking late on Wednesday evening as protesters dispersed after a day of largely peaceful demonstrations, he said:

“Once again the Metropolitan Police have brought their extensive experience of handling 5,000 public order events a year to successfully police the May Day demonstrations that saw thousands of people converge on central London.

“Through their highly professional and proportionate response to the various events today, officers once again managed to strike the right balance between facilitating peaceful protest, ensuring public safety and preventing disorder.

“Their task was made all the more difficult due to the lack of cooperation from some of the protest organisers who were determined to cause maximum disruption.

“I also commend the City of London Police and British Transport Police who worked with the Met throughout the day to keep London moving and tackle trouble spots and sporadic disturbances as they arose.”
