MPA Chair welcomes £62m budget boost to policing London

A £62 million budget boost to policing London announced today by the Home Secretary has been warmly welcomed by Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority.

In his statement this morning, the Home Secretary, who was visiting New Scotland Yard to see the policing operation for the May Day demonstrations, announced an overall settlement for the Metropolitan Police of £62 million, including £49 million for counter terrorism and policing the Golden Jubilee.

A further £13 million will support street crime initiatives. The provision for counter terrorism includes £15 million to recruit Community Support Officers.

Toby Harris, who accompanied the Home Secretary and the Commissioner, Sir John Stevens, on the visit, said:

“This is very good news for Londoners and this settlement will cover the cost of the increased counter terrorism measures that continue to be undertaken this year following the events of 11 September.

“The additional payment for tackling street crime will help the Met to sustain the success of Operation Safer Streets which has begun to make a significant impact.

“Today’s announcement also means that funding is in place for the recruitment of Community Support Officers but we now have to await the necessary legislation to ensure that they will have the appropriate powers.”
