MPA commemorates Met officers who have died in the line of duty

89/02
10 September 2002

An annual event to commemorate Met police officers who have died in the line of duty was held today when Richard Barnes, Deputy Chair of the MPA, joined Sir John Stevens, Commissioner of Police, invited guests and officers’ relatives at Hendon Police Training College.

The ceremony took place in the Hendon Memorial Garden, officially dedicated by Her Majesty the Queen last October as a memorial to officers who have died in service.

Richard Barnes said:

“This annual event will actively remember all those colleagues who have made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in the line of duty. It is fitting that so many members of those officers’ families are present today to see that we honour the memories of their loved ones and their heroism.

“This act of remembrance comes at a particularly poignant time as we prepare to commemorate the first anniversary of the terrorist atrocities in America. The memory of the emergency service personnel who sacrificed their lives then should remind us of the dedication to public safety and selfless disregard for their own lives of London’s police, many of whom face dangerous situations every working day.”
