MPA welcomes new national policing plan

119/02
20 November 2002

The Metropolitan Police Authority today welcomed publication of the first ever National Policing Plan (NPP) by the Home Secretary, David Blunkett.

The plan sets out in one document the government's aims for policing over the next three years and these aims will be reflected in the MPA's first ever strategy for the Metropolitan Police starting 1 April 2003. The Authority is particularly glad that the plan makes explicit the role of police authorities in ensuring the accountability of the police to local communities.

David Blunkett made his announcement at the Association of Police Authorities Annual Conference, Harrogate.

Attending the conference, Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said:

“The MPA, working with the MPS, will develop a strategy which takes forward the Home Secretary's plans for policing generally while, crucially, addressing the unique needs of the capital and our many diverse communities.

“The Authority will ensure that local priorities in every borough will reflect the genuine concerns of the local community and enable us to make a reality out of policing by consent. We are reassured by the small print of the plan which makes it clear that national priorities will not be allowed to override these local concerns and wishes.”

Notes to editors

1. The National Policing Plan is available on the police reform website

2. Each police authority must issue a three-year 'strategy plan' consistent with the National Policing Plan by 31 March 2003. Before issuing its strategy plan, a police authority must submit the proposed plan to the Home Secretary.
