MPA - highest ever police numbers spells reassurance for Londoners

70/03
02 October 2003

The Metropolitan Police Authority today welcomed the announcement that the Met has attained its highest ever number of police officers at 29,497.

Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said:

“These latest figures are a real achievement and reflect the determination of the MPA and Met to place more officers at the heart of policing London.

“The recruitment of such large numbers - more than 4,000 in the last three years - places great strains on the infrastructure of the Met in terms of training, equipping and the logistics of support. The MPA recognises this and reviews the situation continuously to ensure that our officers receive the levels of training and backup they need to carry out their duties to the high standards we expect.

“More police officers on our streets, together with over 700 Police Community Support Officers, spells greater reassurance for Londoners.”

Notes to editors

  1. The overall target set for the end of March 2004 is 29,856 officers.
  2. There have also been consistent increases in the number of visible ethnic minority officers joining the Met, with 1,727 (5.85% of the total strength), an increase of 329 officers from 1398 (5.1% of total strength) a year ago.
