Metropolitan Police Authority - seeking six new independent members

71/03
02 October 2003

The Metropolitan Police Authority is now looking for six dynamic people with strong and progressive views on policing to become independent members of the Authority in July 2004.

The MPA has responsibility to maintain an efficient and effective police service across London and ensure the Metropolitan Police Service is accountable to all of the capital’s communities. Its ‘board’ comprises 23 members, six of them independent members selected through this open recruitment process, all of whom share the aim to drive forward change and improvement in the Metropolitan Police Service.

Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA, said:

“The MPA oversees the UK’s largest police service with a staff of 40,000 and an annual budget of more than £2 billion.

“The effectiveness of the Authority is determined by the contribution of its 23 members. We are looking for six individuals who share our view that Londoners deserve the best police service in the world and possess a clear vision on how to strengthen partnership between all of London’s diverse communities and the Metropolitan Police.

“Whatever your experience, whether in management, finance, public service, community work or race relations, your input must be positive and constructive, working with others to secure an effective and efficient police service for the 21st century at a time of unprecedented growth in police numbers and the wider police family.

“If you think you have the qualities we are looking for and ‘fit the Bill’, please think seriously about applying.”

Those appointed will help shape the way London is policed, ensure the police treat everyone fairly and equally, help improve the performance of the police, and contribute to the Authority’s goal of making London the safest major city in the world.
