MPA – cautious welcome to extra anti-terrorist funding

The Metropolitan Police Authority today gave a cautious welcome to the announcement of an additional £12 million funding for the Metropolitan Police’s anti-terrorist activities.

The announcement was made today by the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, attending an emergency Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

Toby Harris, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said:

“While the MPA welcomes this additional funding as an initial response to the ever-increasing workload of the anti-terrorist branch, it is only a start and much more is needed to ensure we stay on top of potential threats.

“We will continue to support the Metropolitan Police in their dedicated work against the terrorist threat. But the Authority also has the duty to ensure that resources are not diverted away from everyday policing that are making the capital a safer place for Londoners. That is why we will continue to call upon the government for even greater resources to be directed into our efforts to prevent terrorism.”
