MPA Clerk Pays Tribute to Toby Harris, Former MPA Chair

Commenting today on the end of Toby Harris’s tenure as chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Catherine Crawford, clerk of the MPA, said:

“As the first chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Toby Harris has made a significant and personal contribution, successfully steering the fledgling Authority in its task of securing a fair and transparent police service for London and its communities.

“Under his direction, the MPA has transformed the financial management of the Met, overseen the introduction of Police Community Support Officers and the steady expansion of the service towards its goal of 35,000 officers, and worked consistently to ensure the involvement of London’s communities in the direction of their police service.

“Toby Harris’s tenure as chair has been inspiring and I know he will be missed by his friends and colleagues at the MPA.”

Notes to editors

1. Toby Harris was elected to the Greater London Assembly as member for Brent and Harrow in 2000 and selected by the Mayor to be a GLA member of the Metropolitan Police Authority. MPA members elected Toby to act as its first chair and returned him in that post each successive year. Toby failed to be re-elected as a member of the Greater London Assembly in the elections on 10 June 2004 and his tenure on the MPA ceased on Monday 14 June.

2. The MPA’s two deputy chairs, Richard Barnes and R David Muir, will share the duties of chair until the MPA Annual General Meeting on 8 July when members will elect a new chair and deputy/ies.
