MPA consults with Londoners on equality and diversity policies

The Metropolitan Police Authority is holding a major external consultation workshop on their equality and diversity policies and first Corporate Equality Plan (CEP) on 1 July 2004. The capital's community watchdogs, government bodies, voluntary sector groups and representatives from London's police services have been invited to attend.
Kirsten Hearn, MPA member responsible for Local Government Equality Standards, said:
"The MPA has an excellent record of consultation and engagement with its stakeholders and community organisations. This workshop is aimed at getting feedback and observations that will lead to improvements in our draft equalities policies and CEP.
"This is the second event at which the views and suggestions of external participants have been sought to achieve MPA equalities policies that will ensure race equality and fairness at work, both of which are crucial to external community and internal staff relations in the MPA and the MPS.
"The MPA has committed itself to some challenging equalities objectives and we are on the way to achieving a number of these including level 1 of the Local Government Equality Standards. Innovative work is also underway on our equality impact assessments. I hope that this event will give us the endorsement that we are seeking from our partners, stakeholders and communities.
"We are determined to engage communities in our activities in order to increase confidence and trust in the policing of London, drive forward the MPS to achieve a more representative workforce, and address concerns about fairness at work for all MPA and police staff."
