No plans for Met prison ship – MPA chair

08/05
10 February 2005

Len Duvall, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said today that there are no plans to buy a prison ship for the Metropolitan Police to overcome a shortage of cells.

He said:

“The MPA has already considered this issue and agreed with the Metropolitan Police Custody Directorate assessment that a prison ship moored on the Thames was not and never will be a feasible option for overcoming the shortage of cells.

“We are looking at the possibility of mobile custody suites as used by a number of police forces but a floating cell complex is not among the options due to a range of practical and health and safety issues.

“We would only sanction facilities built to our own standards and design. A floating facility simply would not come up to the standards required by the Home Office or by us. The idea is a non runner both financially and operationally and the MPA will not support it.”
