Metropolitan Police Authority - July meeting

36/05
25 July 2005

A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority will be held in meeting room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday 28 July 2005 at 10 a.m.

Referring to the death of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Underground station on Friday 22 July 2005 Len Duvall, Chair of the MPA, said:

“The MPA sends their deepest condolences to the family of Jean Charles de Menezes. This is a shocking tragedy, which will be subject to an appropriate and objective investigation.

“However we must remember the context in which this happened. Londoners have been subjected to a series of appalling attacks over the past two weeks and the police involved in this tragic incident believed they were acting to protect the lives of the public.

“We will continue to support the MPS’ on-going investigation and maintain the increased security measures as long as necessary. All London’s communities need to remain calm and stand united against the perpetrators of these evil outrages.”

Subjects to be discussed by the Authority at the meeting include:

  • GLA group response strategy to a pandemic flu outbreak;
  • MPA accounts for the year ended 31 March 2005;
  • MPA budget 2005 – 2006 and provisional outturn 2004 – 2005;
  • MPA Race Equality Scheme 2005 – 2008 Joint MPA/MPS Equality Statement;
  • London-wide Race Hate Crime Forum; and
  • Update from the Morris Steering Group

Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.
