Metropolitan Police Authority welcomes 2006/07 police budget
10/06
15 February 2006
The MPA has welcomed the Mayor’s budget agreed today (15 February 2006) which set a £2.8 billion policing budget for London in 2006/7. The budget was passed unamended by the London Assembly.
Len Duvall, chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said:
“The increase in the Mayor’s precept, aside from the contribution to fund the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is predominantly to pay for improved policing and this specific element amounts to just 28 pence a week.
“This budget guarantees a Safer Neighbourhoods team for every ward in London two years ahead of schedule. By the end of April 2006, every neighbourhood in London will have a team of at least four Met staff and by the end of April 2007 we will have more than 625 fully staffed, dedicated teams in place.
“The introduction of Safer Neighbourhood teams across London has marked the biggest change in community policing in the history of the Met. These teams, a mixture of three police officers and three community support officers have been introduced as a direct response to meet the needs of our local communities. In those areas where we have already established teams, crime has fallen and public confidence has risen.
“The budget also includes £30 million extra for counter terrorism measures (rising to £45 million in 2007/8) bringing the level of specific counter terrorism funding for the Met to £257 million in 2006/7. This is a substantially increased budget and will be fully spent on strengthening the Met’s capability to counter the terrorist threat.
“The budget will also result in savings of a further £68 million, making a cumulative total since 2000 of over £300 million. The Authority will ensure that effective financial management remains a priority for the MPA and we will continue to work with the MPS to cut crime and enhance community safety.”
