Metropolitan Police Authority – March meeting

20/06
28 March 2006

A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority will be held in Meeting Room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday 30 March 2006 at 10.00 a.m.

Members will be considering a report which details the current position of the Safer Neighbourhoods programme.

Len Duvall, chair of the MPA, said:

“Safer Neighbourhoods is the greatest development in community policing London has seen in the past 30 years and by this April there will be 625 dedicated teams across London. Having committed this level of resources we must make sure a robust performance measurement structure is in place.

“Teams are expected to have a good knowledge of crime trends within their areas, but we also want to identify and spread good practice across London. For example a Chessington based team recently negotiated an agreement with local estate agents for an insert in new residents’ welcome packs giving details of the Safer Neighbourhoods team. This is a simple yet effective idea that can be shared with other teams.

“We must also make certain that the Met’s success in focusing on local crime targets does not impact on their continuing success in reducing London-wide priority crimes.”

Other subjects to be discussed by the Authority at the meeting include:

  • revenue and capital budget;
  • MPA Scrutiny programme 2006/7; and
  • recovery of policing costs for Heathrow and London city airports.

Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.
