Head of Counter Terrorism Command DAC Peter Clarke to retire

Joint MPA/MPS statement

Following careful consideration, after more than 30 years service in the Metropolitan Police and some five years in his current role, as well as National Co-ordinator of Terrorist Investigations, DAC Peter Clarke has decided to retire from the police service on 31 January 2008. Reluctantly, the Metropolitan Police Authority and the Commissioner have accepted his decision.

Len Duvall, chair of the MPA, said:

“DAC Peter Clarke Is a dedicated public servant, often working behind the scenes, who made an immense contribution to protecting the public and in doing so has undoubtedly saved lives.”

MPS Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said:

“DAC Peter Clarke has performed outstandingly. His contribution to the fight against terrorism has been truly significant."

DAC Clarke is retiring in order to pursue a range of new appointments and projects. Arrangements to appoint his successor are in hand and an advertisement will appear shortly.

Notes to editors

1. Selection process for the post (Head of Counter Terrorism Command and National Co-ordinator of Terrorist Investigations):

  • The post will be advertised in Police Review within the next few weeks;
  • Commanders, Assistant Chief Constables (ACC) on promotion, Deputy Assistant Commissioners (DAC) and Deputy Chief Constables on level transfer will be eligible to apply. The post is not open to non-UK applicants;
  • For all ACPO appointments the Home Secretary’s approval is required for shortlisted candidates.
  • The panel members for the board will be members of the Authority. Interested partners, including the Home Office, ACPO and the Security Service will be consulted on the appointment of Peter Clarke’s successor. The Commissioner will advise the board and Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC) will attend the shortlisting process.
