MPA: Policing with Authority

46/09
26 June 2009

The Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) will host its annual community engagement conference on the 27 June 2009 in central London.

‘Policing with Authority: working with the communities of London and their policing services’, is the fourth annual conference organised by the MPA. It will bring together over 200 delegates representing community groups and volunteers who work with the MPA and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) across London.

The core work of the MPA in holding the MPS to account will be a key theme of the day, while delegates debate new and developing work to engage and consult with London’s communities and how to spread good practice across the boroughs.

Cindy Butts, MPA independent Member and chair of the Authority’s Communities, Equalities and People Committee, said:

“As the MPA has increased investment in community engagement over the last five years, both financially and in terms of support and training, we have seen significant development across all Community Police Engagement Groups. The challenge now is to continue to develop the necessary skills at the local level to enable meaningful engagement to take place and hence ensure improvements in police community engagement continue. This will be to everyone’s benefit.

“This year the MPA is pleased to launch an annual community engagement award to recognise the valuable work that countless numbers of volunteers across London do to improve community police engagement. Their dedication to improving London’s police services is absolutely vital and we applaud their work.”

Delegates will participate in one of a number of workshops aiming to encourage discussion and networking between partners, stakeholders and the many volunteers who participate in police community relations.
