Metropolitan Police Authority Inspection Report

19/10
22 March 2010

Kit Malthouse, chair of the MPA, responding to the Authority inspection report by the Audit Commission and Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC), said:

“We are very pleased that after nearly two years of work and a complete reorganisation the Inspectors have recognised we are on a steep improvement curve to a future of excellence.

“They were particularly complimentary about Met Forward and have already cited it as an example of positive, strategic planning which other police authorities should follow.

“We also welcome the recognition that there is strong and effective leadership focused on driving change, and that our staff and members are committed to a process of continual improvement towards a safer city.”

The report found that the Authority needs to ensure that its consultation exercises are effective in engaging London’s diverse population, including disaffected and underrepresented groups. The Authority is determined to ensure the MPS is fully engaged   in this area and there are several initiatives in place to ensure improvements continue. The Authority’s community engagement strategy is under review in order to respond better to the concerns of Londoners.

Kit Malthouse concluded:

“It is very important for the people of London to see that policing in the capital provides value for money and we have a strategy in place to make sure this happens.

"We are currently putting together a management plan to address the areas for improvement identified in the report, and this will be presented to the MPA Strategic and Operational Policing Committee in May 2010 for endorsement.

“The inspection found that the Authority is good at scrutinising the Commissioner and has a wide range of effective arrangements to ensure that the MPS is delivering services that matter to Londoners efficiently and strategically.”
