Metropolitan Police Authority welcomes Civil Liberties Panel first report ‘Post G20’

The MPA Civil Liberties Panel report ‘Post G20’, investigating the Met’s current public order policing strategies and making recommendations for a way forward, was ratified by members at the full Authority meeting on 25 March 2010.  Members congratulated the Panel on the thoroughness and breadth of their first report. The Panel will now monitor delivery of the Met’s action plan in response to the HMIC report and its own recommendations.

Victoria Borwick, MPA member and chair of the Panel, said:

“Members of the MPA wholeheartedly welcomed our report into public order policing and its recommendations.

"Our remit was to look specifically at how the Met is learning and changing as a result of reviews by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), commissioned by Sir Paul Stephenson, and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).  All the HMIC recommendations have been accepted, with many already in hand, and we will now oversee delivery of these recommendations as well as our own to ensure the Met responds to the changing nature of public protest.

"We would like to thank everyone who participated in this scrutiny and provided us with such valuable information.

“To maintain public confidence in the way protests are policed we have to find a balance between civil liberties and the need to maintain public safety and public order through proportionate policing.”
