MPA Chief Executive receives OBE

31/10
12 June 2010

Catherine Crawford, Chief Executive of the Metropolitan Police Authority, has been awarded an OBE in the Her Majesty the Queen's 2010 Birthday Honours List for her services to policing.

In response to the announcement, Catherine Crawford said:

"I am delighted and honoured to be awarded an OBE in this year’s Birthday Honours. I know this individual award is in large part recognition of the many people who have provided me with their advice and support throughout my career, most especially those who have assisted me in recent years to establish and maintain open and transparent scrutiny of the work of the Metropolitan Police Service in London.”

Catherine Crawford has been Chief Executive of the MPA since its inauguration in 2000.

Notes to Editors

1.     Catherine Crawford biography:

Catherine Crawford was born and educated in Cardiff – she retains a working knowledge of the Welsh language - before reading English at Cambridge University. Entering the Home Office in 1970, she served in the Criminal Department, the Prison Service, the Parole Board and Personnel before joining the Police Department in 1993. Earlier in her career, following the birth of her two children, she became the first Principal in the Home Office to work part time.

Working for Ken Clarke when Home Secretary, Catherine was instrumental in designing legislation leading to the creation of police authorities in their current form. In 1997 Catherine left the civil service to become the founding executive director of the new national Association of Police Authorities. In December 2000 she became the first Clerk to the newly established Metropolitan Police Authority, a post that evolved in 2004 to Chief Executive. Catherine has, so far, worked with three Commissioners and four Chairs of the MPA.
