MPA appoints two new Deputy Assistant Commissioners to the Met

The Metropolitan Police Authority has appointed Mark Simmons and Steve Kavanagh, currently MPS Commanders, as new Deputy Assistant Commissioners with the Metropolitan Police Service.

The interviews were conducted by a panel of MPA members, with John Yates, Acting Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and Catherine Crawford, MPA Chief Executive, acting as advisers to the panel.

Commenting on the appointment, Kit Malthouse, chair of the MPA, said:

“Many congratulations to Mark Simmons and Steve Kavanagh on their appointments as Deputy Assistant Commissioners. While we had a strong field of candidates to select from, both Mark and Steve excelled in interview and impressed the panel with their knowledge and experience. We expect each of them to play a big part in ensuring the Met and its officers make London a safer city for everyone.”

Acting Deputy Commissioner John Yates, said:

"I'm extremely pleased that two such strong candidates have been successful at the board. Both DAC Mark Simmons and DAC Steve Kavanagh consistently demonstrate the necessary skills to operate at this level and in interview proved to be the best candidates."

Notes to editors

1. The appointment to Deputy Assistant Commissioner is for a five year fixed term period at an annual starting salary of £139,119.

2. The MPA selection panel comprised: Kit Malthouse (MPA chair) and Steve O’Connell (both Assembly members), Toby Harris (Home Secretary’s appointment), Cindy Butts, Clive Lawton, Reshard Auladin, and Graham Speed (MPA independent members).
