MPA statement following Reid conviction

25 March 2009

"The MPA’s priority is to hold the Commissioner rigorously to account for the operational performance of the MPS. Clearly there are major concerns about the conduct of the investigations into John Worboys and Kirk Reid. In both cases the standard of investigation fell below what we expect of our police service.
"While we recognise that the Met has analysed the failings on borough in both cases, and that there have been significant changes to the way the organisation manages intelligence and carries out sexual offence investigations over the last few years, the Authority expects to be briefed about specific actions taken following these cases and any internal disciplinary processes regarding officers involved
“The reporting of rape or sexual assault is a very difficult decision for an individual to make, and we know already that under reporting is a significant factor in this area. Such fundamental failings do not inspire confidence and therefore the MPA expects the Met to do everything possible to reassure Londoners that reported incidents will be vigorously investigated.”
