Race and Faith Inquiry: update statement from Cindy Butts

7 April 2009

“Over recent months the MPA’s Race and Faith Inquiry has spoken with a broad range of individuals and organisations from the MPS, the public sector and the private sector to help us explore how race and faith issues affect individuals as employees.
“We appreciate everyone’s assistance to help us establish what is still required to achieve real cultural change within the MPS and facilitate the development of a police service that promotes open dialogue on diversity issues and provides a safe working environment for all officers and staff.
“Our sincere thanks go to the Commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, who has given his wholehearted support to the inquiry and its aims, his colleagues from the MPS and everyone who has given their time to participate, whether in the public sessions, privately or by joining the focus groups. Without them, and their willingness to be open about their experiences, our work would not be possible.
“Our evidence gathering sessions have now almost concluded. We await confirmation of a date for the Met Black Police Association to come and share their experiences, and a session with MPA members to obtain their input, after which we will prepare our final report and recommendations for consideration by colleagues at the June full Authority meeting.”
