MPA statement: London looting and rioting

Chair of the MPA Kit Malthouse said:

“The looting and rioting over the weekend has been a shocking and disgusting spectacle and was simply mindless youths intent on using a legitimate community gathering in Tottenham for their own criminal and violent ends.

“There is no excuse or rationale for what they have done - they were determined to commit acts of violence, criminal damage and theft - but they will be caught and brought before the courts to answer for their actions.

“We will not tolerate this mindless criminality and will work with local communities to make sure we deal with these individuals. Every borough will be working closely with their residents to assess the impact of the disorder.

“Quick and decisive action by police meant that more than 160 arrests have been made over the weekend and we have the resources in place to continue to police London effectively in the coming days.

“We must remember that the vast majority of Londoners are appalled by this violence. We are determined to make sure they can go about their normal business and live without fear of disruption and violence.

“Business as usual went on throughout the weekend. The Met continued to make sure emergency calls were dealt with and there are robust plans and resources in place to tackle any further disorder, deal with normal policing across the city and keep Londoners safe.

“I salute and thank those brave police officers who put themselves in harm’s way this weekend and wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.”
