Public statement in relation to AC Yates

Mr Yates announced his intention to resign as a Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner on 18 July 2011. Since this date, Mr Yates has taken a period of leave and has been handing over his responsibilities to his successor. The Authority and Mr Yates have agreed to his formally leaving office as at midnight on 7 November 2011.

When Mr Yates announced his intention to resign he said “I have acted with complete integrity and my conscience is clear. I look forward to the future… where my role will be examined in a proper and calmer environment and where my actions will be judged on the evidence.”

There is also now an opportunity for the Metropolitan Police Authority to consider its own recent actions to see what lessons, if any, may be learned for the future.

Following Mr Yates’ announcement of his intention to resign the Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Kit Malthouse, said:

"John Yates has bravely served the people of London for 30 years. Never far from the action, he has taken on some of the most complex and challenging investigations, despite significant reputational and personal risk.”

“Rare is the man or woman whose temperament and intellect can cope with the constant stress and risk that John has borne with such apparent ease. We should all be deeply grateful for his many years of service.”
