Summary

This report seeks approval to the attendance of two MPA members at the Fifth UK National Problem Orientated Policing Conference to be held at the Hanover Hotel, Hinckley, Leicestershire on 5 – 6 September 2002.

A. Recommendation

That

  1. approval is given to the attendance of two members at the fifth UK National Problem Orientated Policing Conference; and
  2. the Clerk be authorised to agree which Members should attend.

B. Supporting information

1. In May 2001 the former Co-ordination and Urgency Committee approved a process for agreeing Members’ attendance at conferences on behalf of the MPA. As part of this process, the Committee’s approval is required if the cost of the conference, including travel and accommodation expenses, exceeds £500 per delegate.

2. The fifth UK National Problem Orientated Policing Conference is to be held at the Hanover Hotel, Hinckley, Leicestershire on 5 – 6 September. 

3. The will provide a platform for the latest developments in problem orientated crime reduction. A high profile platform of speakers and workshops will demonstrate the different ways that problem orientated crime reduction has helped to deal with a range of problems, with particular emphasis on what has worked.

4. This is clearly a conference that is very relevant to the MPA and it is proposed that two members’ of the Co-ordination and Policing Committee attend as MPA representatives.

5. The Committee’s agreement is sought as the cost exceeds the £500 threshold. The cost is £355 per delegate inclusive of accommodation for two nights. Travel will be £148, making a total cost per delegate of £503.

4. The cost can be met from the MPA budget for 2002/03.
