Report: 15
Date: 23 September 2004
By: Commissioner
Summary
The former police station is being refurbished and upgraded to accommodate the TRIDENT North Operational Command Unit and others. The premises comprise a three-storey main building with adjoining single storey annex (formerly mounted branch offices) and stable block. All buildings within the site curtilage share the same postal address. Members are asked to endorse the renaming of these premises in memory of a police officer who died in service.
A. Recommendations
Members endorse the proposal to rename the former Police Station at West Hendon, Edgware Road: ‘Julian Headon House’.
B. Supporting information
1. The refurbishment of the property will provide the much needed accommodation for TRIDENT in the north of the capital, which has experienced significant growth since the unit was formed in 2000. The enhanced site provides office accommodation and supporting infrastructure together with a new briefing facility and exhibits store.
2. From both an operational and administrative point of view the Trident OCU (as major shareholder) has made a case for the building to be given its own identity.
3. The Operational Command Team, following consultation with staff and the Police Federation, has suggested that it be named in honour of DCI Julian Headon who died on 19 February 2004. A briefing note from the Borough Business Manager, is attached at Appendix 1 for members only.
4. Julian Headon’s wife has been consulted and welcomes the suggestion to rename these premises in memory of her late husband.
5. The OCU Commander Chief Superintendent John Coles endorses the name ‘Julian Headon House’. The Commissioner is aware of and approves these proposals.
6. The building will retain its existing postal address.
7. Subject to member endorsement it is proposed that the OCU will hold a small ceremony when the building works are completed.
