MPA welcomes drive to cut knife crimes

53/01
31 July 2001

The Metropolitan Police Authority welcomed the Met’s Safer Streets advertising campaign to combat knife crime, launched today by the Commissioner, Sir John Stevens.

Richard Sumray, Chair of the Professional Standards and Performance Monitoring Committee said:

“Carrying a knife is increasing amongst young people and it is very important that this campaign highlights the dangers of this culture.

“We know from our consultation processes that Londoners are very aware and worried by the amount of violent crime on our streets where knives are used. Therefore the MPA were keen to have this type of crime included as a priority in the 2001/2002 policing plan, to help make London’s streets safer for everyone”.

When putting together the first policing plan drawn up by both the MPA and the MPS, Members had argued at length that the criminal use of knives, as well as firearms, should be included as a service delivery priority under the banner ‘Making London’s streets safer’.

The aim is to cut the number of knives being carried unlawfully on London’s streets. Officers will be working with youth offending teams, educational authorities and trading standards officers to clamp down on shops selling knives to young people under 16. The campaign will run throughout August.
