MPA to look at alternatives to firearms

54/01
01 August 2001

The MPA has been holding discussions with the MPS over a period of time around the issues of the use firearms and possible alternatives.

At the last Full Authority meeting of the MPA, held on the 26 July, Members commissioned a report from the MPS for the next Full Authority, to explore alternative methods of tactics and weaponry, and the protocols and guidelines in the police’s use of firearms.

Toby Harris, Chair of the MPA said,

“Following recent high profile cases of people shot by police, including Derek Bennett in Brixton, the use of firearms by specially trained officers has been highlighted and is being closely examined.

“It is right that alternative methods of incapacitating suspects without the use of lethal force are explored and their suitability rigorously assessed.

“If there is a way of preventing a fatal outcome to a serious incident through the use of an effective alternative to guns, then we should do everything we can to introduce them once they have been proved to be safe and reliable. However, the safety of officers and the public must not be compromised.”

Concern was also expressed about the proliferation and accessibility of imitation firearms as well as the influx of firearms from Eastern Europe and Members agreed to look at the measures being taken to stop this trade.
