Metropolitan Police Authority Member to join Lawrence Steering Group

77/01
22 October 2001

R. David Muir, Chair of the Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee, has been invited to join the Lawrence Steering Group, chaired by the Home Secretary.

The Steering Group was established after the publication of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report and its' purpose is to implement the recommendations of the report.

R. David Muir said,

"I am extremely pleased to have been invited to join the Lawrence Steering Group. It is very important that a Member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, representing Londoners and their police service, is able to contribute to the work of the group.

"The MPA has already addressed two recommendations from the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report, both relating to stop and search. On Friday 23 March, the MPA hosted a stop and search consultation day with key groups in London. This marked the start of a two month consultation programme with communities across London and was integral to a national campaign launched by the Association of Police Authorities on Monday 12 March, to inform people about their rights when stopped and searched by the police.

"Further work by the MPA was carried out to comply with the Home Office who asked all police authorities throughout England to consult with their communities about Recommendation 61 of the Report. This proposes that anyone who is stopped by police should be given a record of that stop.

"Far too many sections of our diverse communities today view the police with hostility, instead of trust. It is our priority to build confidence and trust in police amongst everyone and the MPA will continue to welcome the opportunity of consulting widely with all our communities."

Other members of the Steering Group include representatives from the Race Relations Forum, Commission for Racial Equality, Black Police Association, Association of Police Authorities, Association of Chief Police Officers, Police Federation, Superintendents' Association, HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, Metropolitan Police, and the Crown Prosecution Service. The work of the Steering Group is to ensure changes lead to real improvements and that a long term programme will deliver permanent improvements to every police area.
