MPA fully endorses Commissioner and MPS diversity policies

31/05
30 June 2005

Speaking at the MPA meeting today 30 June 2005, Len Duvall Chair of the Authority said:

"I do not intend to be drawn into the details of the recent Employment Tribunal brought against the MPS but there are important points to be made on outstanding issues.

"London in 2005 is a diverse and complex city and the MPA together with the MPS must understand the communities we serve, if we are to succeed in our mission.

"It is essential we engender confidence from these communities in our police service if we are to make our city safer for everyone.

"We must be intolerant of inappropriate and discriminatory behaviour which must be dealt with robustly and transparently, and the MPA fully endorses the Commissioner and his management team 's policies in relation to diversity.

"This is not a personality issue as some press reports have suggested - individuals cannot be pilloried. The Authority supports Ian Blair as Commissioner and the MPS management team on issues of diversity and across the board in the direction he is taking the Met. An attack on one is an attack on us all."
