Metropolitan Police Authority – January meeting
02/06
24 January 2006
A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority will be held in Meeting Room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday, 26 January 2006 at 10 a.m.
In December 2005 the MPA hosted ‘Together against Terrorism’ inviting representatives from London’s diverse communities to join the debate about how London should be policed to prevent further terrorist atrocities. The Authority will be presented with a report summarising the views voiced both at the conference and via the MPA online questionnaire.
Len Duvall, Chair of the MPA, said:
“The MPA’s job is to consult with London’s communities to find out what they expect from the police. By including public participation in the policing debate this conference signalled an important step change and new departure for the Authority.
“We invited over a hundred people to take part and we urged Londoners to make their view known on our online questionnaire. Combating terrorism is not just a police responsibility. Everyone has a role to play and an opinion that should be heard.”
The Authority will also agree a response to the proposals set out in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s consultation paper for additional powers and responsibilities for the Mayor and the London Assembly. One of the proposals in this consultation paper is that the Mayor should be appointed Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority.
Other subjects to be discussed by the Authority at the meeting include:
- Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership update;
- MPS involvement in Local Area Agreements; and
- a review of the way the MPA conducts its business.
Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.
