Equal opportunities statement for the MPA

Summary

Following discussion at meetings of the Human Resources (HR) Committee and the Consultation, Diversity and Outreach (CDO) Committee, a working group was set up by the CDO to produce an equal opportunities statement. The working group met twice and agreed a statement for the CDO Committee meeting on 19 December 2000. At that meeting it was resolved that the CDO Committee note the action taken by the working group and that the equal opportunities statement be considered by the Human Resources Committee on 18 January 2001. The HR Committee agreed a slightly revised version of the MPA Statement and resolved that the statement should be considered by the full Authority at its next meeting.

A. Recommendation

That the full Authority endorse the equal opportunities statement attached at Appendix 1.

B. Supporting information

The equal opportunities statement endorsed by the CDO Committee at its meeting on 19 December, was considered by the HR Committee on 18 January.

The HR Committee expressed the view that whilst the general structure and content of the statement was excellent, it lacked a certain crispness. In the light of this, a re-drafted version of the statement was prepared with which members of the HR Committee were generally content, subject to one or two alterations. A copy of the revised statement, together with a letter explaining why the changes had been made, was sent to members of the CDO Committee.

A copy of the equal opportunities statement is attached at Appendix 1.

There are no direct financial implications.

D. Review arrangements

The MPA Statement will be subject to continuous reviewed and amended as the need arises.

Appendix 1: MPA equal opportunities statement

Vision

The Metropolitan Police Authority will:

  • promote equality of opportunity for all persons irrespective of their race, sex, disability, age, sexual orientation or religion;
