MPA Safer Neighbourhoods scrutiny

“The MPA Safer Neighbourhoods scrutiny has explored how Safer Neighbourhoods teams can best deliver their services, efficiently and effectively, to local communities.

“Two key points have emerged from the scrutiny: Safer Neighbourhoods policing has been a huge success for the MPS and have bought a change to how Londoners relate to and perceive their local police; and a wholesale revision to how Safer Neighbourhoods policing is delivered in wards is not required.

“A majority of the participants in the scrutiny requested the flexibility for borough commanders, alongside local authority partners and residents, to devise a Safer Neighbourhoods response that best meets the needs of their boroughs, and found examples where boroughs have adopted variations to the fixed ward-based approach to better meet local need.

“The MPA scrutiny recognises there is scope for change and efficiencies within the current model. For example on smaller wards it may be possible to streamline management of those teams, but any changes proposed would have to be clearly evidenced, and take full account of consultation with local communities.

“The MPA fully supports the principle of a dedicated Safer Neighbourhoods presence for every ward in London and the funding allocated to Police Community Support Officers and Police Constables delivering Safer Neighbourhoods has been protected in the budget.”
