Summary
A petition has been received from the Leader of London Borough of Waltham Forest that calls for a fairer level of police resourcing in Waltham Forest and for an additional 120 police officers for the Borough.
A. Recommendation
That members receive the petition.
B. Supporting information
1. A petition has been received by the Authority from Councillor Chris Robbins (Leader of the London Borough of Waltham Forest).
2. The petition which has been signed by approximately 6,000 people and states:
‘Safety on our streets is the biggest concern for our residents and our campaign for more police officers has the support of all political parties in the council’.
‘We are asking the whole community to support us in our call for a fair level of police resourcing in Waltham Forest. Show your support by signing our petition to help us secure 120 extra police officers for the borough.’
3. Additional text with petition states that ‘Metropolitan Police crime figures shows Waltham Forest has a disproportionate level of serious crime and a shortfall in police officers compared to other London boroughs with similar crime profiles’.
4. A response to the petition will be provided at the meeting.
5. Councillor Chris Robbins has indicated that he will be attending the meeting to present the petition. If he is in attendance, MPA Standing Order – 2.6.5 allows for the presentation of the petition to take up to five minutes and following its presentation and response from the Chief Executive, the petitioner may also make further comment for no more than three minutes. Members may also comment on or discuss the issues raised by the question and answer.
